Whilst we may think of photography and film as developments unique to the twentieth century, the theories and experiments with the manipulation and capturing of images and light has been around for thousands of years. As early as the 4th century BC, scientists and thinkers such as Euclid and Aristotle propounded theories on very rudimentary forms of the pin-hole camera. Whilst to this day we could still make a pinhole camera using little more than a cereal packet, some paper and a pair of scissors, the methods of taking and storing photos is a more advanced proposition.

It is easy to be encouraged by the huge amounts of storage space on most modern digital cameras and computers to simply keep our pictures as tiny thumbnails on our photographic device itself, or banished to a folder deep in the hard-drive of the family computer. Yet just because the last analogue and instant cameras seem to be fading away (the instantly-recognisable Polaroid announcing earlier in the year that it would be ceasing production), it doesn’t mean that we should give up viewing our photos in a material manner.

There are plenty of options for storing or displaying your photos. From blown-up reprints and framing to sub-divided decorative boxes, you can keep your photos looking great whether they are on the wall or on a shelf. If you want to have easy access to your favourite photos, without having to spend hundreds on re-printing and framing them all, it might be worth considering a photo book.

With photo books you can organise your photos artistically and thematically, in a manner which the plain old shoe box doesn’t allow. Further, you don’t need to worry about them fading, ripping or bending, as you can store and stick each photo flat, with the addition of a protective cellophane layer should you so wish.

Take a look online at some of the options available to you when it comes to photo books. Companies such as Asda Photos can tailor-make an album to the size and style you want, as you are doing the rest of your general shop. Whatever you choose, don’t let your holiday snaps get relegated to a corner of your desktop that you never touch again…
